Karl-Heinz Klopf

Galerie Grita Insam, Wien

The title of this exhibition referred to the video By Way of Display (2003), which was shown on a monitor at the exhibition. The mode of display, with the monitor installed on some cardboard cartons behind a Perspex sheet, reflected the marketing strategies explored in the video. At the same time, the diagram showing the inserts in the film and a series of eight drawings were presented in the main room of the gallery.

(By Way of Display, 2003; installation: video, Perspex, cardboard packaging, drawings; Galerie Grita Insam, Vienna; December 16, 2003–February 27, 2004)

By Way of Display is the title of the exhibition at the Grita Insam Gallery in Vienna, in which Karl-Heinz Klopf discusses this complex of themes in different models of representation by means of drawings, photographs, an installation and film.
Thus the series of photographs, Play City for instance, which he developed from playing with little balls of polystyrene and in which clusters of a multitude of tiny units can be seen, reminds one, in a model-like way, of urban agglomerations.
That the dynamics and cultural peculiarity of cities arise substantially out of micro-spaces and -scenes will be illustrated in detail in the current digital feature film By Way of Display (urban tactics as seen in the betelnut culture in Taiwan).
The structures of displaying and strategies of marketing shown in the film will be transformed back into the gallery space in the abstracted form of an exhibition display.
In this way an external, cultural phenomenon refers to an inherent structure of the exhibition space: the display.
